Museum het Bolwerk
Discover the fascinating history of the Zeeland-Flanders border region at Museum Het Bolwerk. For centuries, this area between Zeeland and Flanders played an important role during international conflicts and often found itself directly on the front line.
To this day, traces of these wars can still be found throughout the landscape on both sides of the Dutch-Belgian border. Museum Het Bolwerk tells the story of how local inhabitants defended themselves against different enemies over the centuries and how warfare shaped the region.
The historical journey begins with the Roman castellum in Aardenburg and continues through to the bunkers of the Second World War. The museum places special focus on the period of the Eighty Years’ War and the famous State-Spanish Lines, a network of forts, strongholds and fortified towns built to defend the area.
Today, many of these former military structures have been transformed into beautiful nature reserves where rare plants and animals thrive. A unique combination of history, culture and nature in the heart of Zeeland Flanders.
